How can vets help fight antimicrobial resistance? |
Want to access free resources to help you tackle antimicrobial resistance?
Australian Chief Veterinary Officer Dr Mark Schipp
provided a very sobering plenary discussion about the impact of antimicrobial
resistance on the wellbeing of humans, animals and the environment.
Dr Schipp
said: “The present situation is unsustainable, the global trends can’t be
missed.” We need detailed surveillance on antimicrobial use, and the funding to
facilitate this.
In the meantime individual veterinarians and practices can do
their bit.
The Australian Veterinary Association has published a
selection of guidelines designed to reduce antimicrobial resistance, and you don't need to be a member to access these.
For those with an interest in this area, the Australian
Society for Infectious Diseases is hosting a summit on antimicrobial resistance
on June 29 in Melbourne. Find out more here.
